Before the instrumental investigation of speech timing began, the differences in rhythmic organization were attributed to different languages being chunked into isochronic elements on different levels of speech organization: while some languages were believed to have equal-length syllable durations (Italian, Telugu, Yoruba), other were supposed to divide themselves into interstress intervals (English, Russian, Arabic) or morae (Japanese, Tamil) of almost identical duration (Pike, 1945; Han, 1962; Nespor et al. 2011). In this talk, we will discuss why and how the isochronic approach to speech rhythm was refuted, how the existence of rhythmic classes was proven perceptually for adults and infants even in the absence of clear-cut acoustic cues, how speech timing and syllable structure relate to vowel reduction, and what the more reliable physical correlates of rhythm in speech are.
