The creative heritage of Victor Toporov (1946–2013) consists of a large body of translations, primarily from English and German poetic texts included in the Golden Fund of the poetic Canon (William Blake, T. S. Eliot, German expressionists, etc.) and ща almost two decades of essays and memoirs, which brought him a reputation as a brawler (compare the title of the book "Double bottom. Confessions of a brawler") and the author of the "theory of bad translation". To Victor Toporov the Russian culture is obliged by the first monographic edition of translation of verses of W. H. Auden: parallel texts of Auden and translations of V. Toporov appeared in 2000. The presentation examines the linguistic and stylistic features of Toporov's translations from Auden in the context of his declared translation principles, his reputation, as well as — and mainly — as a means of interpretation.
