On February 8-9, 2026, First International Scientific Conference "Human Sciences and Sustainable Development" was held in Iraq. A report at the conference was presented by Prof. Felix Azhimov, Dean of the HSE University Faculty of Humanities.

This year’s HSE University Competition for Faculty Positions has now begun at the university’s campuses in Moscow, St Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, and Perm. Applicants to the competition must select their preferred career trajectory (Academic, Teaching and Methodological, or Professional) and provide supporting information in the competition form.

Researchers of the School of Philological Studies and the Laboratory for Comprehensive Interdisciplinary Projects (HSE University) have prepared a report analyzing communication between pilots and air traffic controllers, and also the barriers that can prevent pilots and controllers from understanding each other. They conducted their research as part of an HSE Big Project called ‘ Language Practices’ led by Professor Mira Bergelson.

Professor Boris Kashnikov, member of the board of directors of the European Society for Military ethics, has given a talk at 14th ICRC Senior Workshop on International Rules Governing Military Operations (SWIRMO), attended by some 250 senior military officers from around the world.

This summer, the HSE Centre for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences was reorganized to become the HSE Institute for Advanced Soviet and Post-Soviet Studies. Using 3D-modelling, researchers of HSE and the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) have restored and deciphered an ancient literary monument of North-Eastern Ancient Rus — inscriptions about the murder of Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky written in 1175–1176 on a wall of the cathedral in Pereslavl-Zalessky. The study was published in Slověne = Словѣне. International Journal of Slavic Studies.

Researchers trying to compare economic data of the USSR and capitalist countries face questions of the comprehensiveness, accessibility, and reliability of data on Soviet economic production and growth. At an online seminar hosted by the HSE University International Centre for the History and Sociology of World War II and its Consequences, Assistant Professor Ilya Voskoboynikov (Faculty of Economic Sciences, HSE University) presented an overview of available approaches to studying the absolute size of the Soviet economy and its growth rates.

Anatoly Vishnevsky, HSE Distinguished Professor and Director of the HSE Institute of Demography, died  at the age of 85. Levada Centre Director Lev Gudkov, writer Denis Dragunsky, and film maker Andrey Smirnov describe Vishnevsky’s contributions to demography and social history in a film by the HSE School of Art and Design.

Lev Manovich, Presidential Professor of computer science at the City University of New York and author of works on digital culture and new media, was one of the first foreign scholars to start remote work with HSE students this academic year. He is leading a project seminar at the Faculty of Humanities for students of the Bachelor’s programme in Cultural Studies.

Until four years ago there was no simple tool for linguists to mark a set of points on a map with different colors. A point corresponded to a language, and its color corresponded to a linguistic feature of the language. This inspired George Moroz, of HSE’s Linguistic Convergence Laboratory and School of Linguistics, to create a new software product that turned out to be very popular: lingtypology.

The coronavirus pandemic is transforming modern society, reviving old social practices and formulas such as the Russian ‘flat-car-dacha’ principle, while opening new technological frontiers and creating new cultural skills. From a northern village to an academic article, or How many linguists do you need to describe variation in Russian dialect?

There has been published a new monograph by Olga A. Zhukova, chief research fellow at the IL for the Study of Russian and European Intellectual Dialogue.

The Linguistic Convergence Laboratory and the School of Linguistics are organizing an International Summer School on Areal Linguistics and Languages of Russia.

In March and June of 2019, Marina Butovskaya, a senior fellow of the International Anthropology Centre and an associate member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, went on expeditions to the United Republic of Tanzania with a team of her colleagues.

Language Science Press has published a book on the Mehweb language, edited by Michael Daniel and Nina Dobrushina of the Linguistic Convergence Laboratory and Dmitry Ganenkov of the Laboratory of Caucasian languages.

Alexander Piperski, Lecturer at the HSE School of Philology, has received an award for Russian young literature and languages researchers for his book <em>Constructing Languages: From Esperanto to Dothraki</em>.

New article by Elena Penskaya, the head of the School of Philolohy, in the Italian academic journal "Enthymema".

On October 15-21, the second Italy-Russia cultural exchange meeting took place at Amalfi. Devoted to art and spirituality, the event drew the participation of staff members from the HSE Faculty of Humanities. During the meeting a book on the Russian footprint in Amalfi’s history was presented.
