Results of the Conference 'History of Soviet Jewry (1918-1991): New Sources, New Approaches'
A jointly-organized conference of the International Center for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences and the Research Center of the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center, with participation from New York University’s “A Comprehensive History of the Jews of the Soviet Union” project (sponsored by Eugene and Zara Shvidler), took place at the library of the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center on June 15-16, 2016.

Alisa Maximova is doing an internship at King's College London

Alisa Maximova, research intern of the Research Centre for Contemporary Culture, is visiting King’s College London as a part of her PhD programme at HSE. Her work in KCL is supervised by Dr. Dirk vom Lehn, coauthor of several papers on museum visitor interaction and participation, as well as author of the book “Harold Garfinkel: The Creation and Development of Ethnomethodology”. Alisa is a visiting PhD student in the Work, Interaction and Technology Research Centre in the Department of Management. Members of the Centre specialize in studying social interaction, role of technology and material objects in collaboration and conduct in offices, control centers, medical environment, museums.

Vitaly Kurennoy, Professor and Head of HSE’s School of Cultural Studies (Faculty of Humanities) gave a presentation entitled ‘Contemporary Cultural Policy in Russia’ on April 22 at Ruhr University Bochum during a joint colloquium of the Department of Eastern European History and a seminar at the Lotman Institute for Russian and Soviet Culture.

Every era builds its own version of the Middle Ages, and the modern age is no exception. Oleg Voskoboynikov, the youngest full professor at the Higher School of Economics, talks about the reason for the popularity of metaphors that refer to that era, why the ‘Suffering Middle Ages’ group on 'VKontakte' is not the same thing as medieval studies and how the desire to be different from everyone else can lead a student to study the Middle Ages.
