Ekaterina Ageeva, third year student on the Fundamental and Computational Linguistics programme at the HSE  Faculty of Humanities participated in the international conference on machine translation and presented her paper.

On April 27 John F. Bailyn, Professor at the Department of Linguistics, State University of New York spoke on: ‘Language, Fire, Music and Chess: Thoughts on the Evolution and Acquisition of Cognitive Systems’. The event was organized by HSE School of Linguistics.

From March 24-28, 2015, Toronto (Canada) hosted the TESOL 2015 International Convention and English Language Expo. It drew more than 5,600 professionals from 91 countries who planned to cross borders and build bridges. There were more than 1,000 academic sessions offered in Toronto. Aida Rodomanchenko, head of learning and teaching office at the academic department of foreign languages at the HSE was the only speaker from Russia. Her talk was entitled Roundtable discussion as an alternative to a traditional oral examination.

On May 15, Dr James Canton of the University of Essex will deliver a lecture at HSE on ‘Wild Writing’, a form of literature that emerged in the mid-twentieth century as a novel way of understanding the urban landscape and nature. The author of numerous publications focused primarily on British travel writing in Arabia, Dr Canton’s lecture will focus on a discussion of local Essex landscapes.

Olga Sozinova, a third-year undergraduate student, shared her impressions of a workshop she attended in Leiden.

On  April 20 Jay M. Winter, Professor of History at Yale University spoke on ‘Shell Shock in the First World War and after’. The event was organized by Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities.

Alexandra Bassel, student of the full-time advanced postgraduate programme at the School of Philology, told the HSE News Service about her internship at the University of Göttingen.

Vitaly Kurennoy, Professor and Head of HSE’s School of Cultural Studies (Faculty of Humanities) gave a presentation entitled ‘Contemporary Cultural Policy in Russia’ on April 22 at Ruhr University Bochum during a joint colloquium of the Department of Eastern European History and a seminar at the Lotman Institute for Russian and Soviet Culture.

On April 10, 2015, the session ‘Universalism and Relativism in the Philosophy of Language and Mind’, organized by the Schools of Linguistics and Philosophy, took place at HSE as part of the XVI April International Academic Conference.
