Irina Savelieva, director of IGITI, and Alexandra Kolesnik, junior research fellow, participated in the annual conference on public history arranged by International Federation for Public History (IFPH-FIHP) and Italian Association of Public History (AIPH) on June 5-9, 2017, in Ravenna (Italy). Irina Savelieva reported on "Public History in Russia: Professional Work, Amateurism, a Hobby, or a ‘Star Fever’ of an Academic Historian?," while Alexandra Kolesnik spoke about "Performing History on Stage: Representations of the Past in British Heavy Metal." 

The conference will be held on 7-8 June. Organizers: International Centre for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences, National Research University – Higher School of Economics (Moscow, Russian Federation) and The Friedrich Ebert Foundation.

On May 31, Valerie Kivelson, Professor of History at the University of Michigan, will be delivering a seminar entitled ‘Visualizing Empire: Muscovite Images of Race’. Professor Kivelson is an expert in Medieval and early modern Russia, history of cartography, history of witchcraft, religion, and political culture, among other topics. She is the author of 'Desperate Magic: The Moral Economy of Witchcraft in Seventeenth Century Russia' and a guest editor of 'Witchcraft Casebook: Magic in Russia, Poland and Ukraine. 15-21st Centuries'.

On May 23, Prof. Ellen Rutten, Professor of Literature and Chair of the Department of Russian & Slavic Studies at the University of Amsterdam presented a paper based on her new book “Sincerity after Communism” (Yale University Press, 2017) at the Research Center for Contemporary Culture Academic Seminar. Seminar was organised by the Center together with research groop "Participatory culture: communities and practices".

On May 23, Ellen Rutten, Professor of Russian and Slavic Studies at the University of Amsterdam, delivered a lecture at HSE on her new book, ‘Sincerity after Communism’. An expert on Slavonic literature and culture, Professor Rutten is involved in numerous projects, including the Digital Emotions group, Sublime Imperfections, and ‘Russian Literature’, a journal where she serves as editor-in-chief.

On May 22, 2017 within the framework of the seminar "West and East: Universalism of Culture" of the International Laboratory for the Study of Russian and European Intellectual Dialogue there was a masterclass of prof. Tatyana Gennadievna Shchedrina.

Nadia Moro delivered a talk on Herbart's philosophy at the Conference of the Society for the Study of the History of Analytical Philosophy in Calgary (Alberta, Canada)

Google announced the recepients of its several scholarship programs, including the Women Techmakers Scholarship (formerly the Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship). Among this year's winners Elizaveta Kuzmenko, 1st year student on the Computational Linguistics MA programme at HSE.

Yale postdoc Kevin Tang recently gave a talk at HSE on his research in experimental phonology. We talked to Kevin about his conversion from an engineer to a linguist and asked him how he liked the feedback he received from HSE students.
