Academic Studies Press issued the ‘Word and Image in Russian History: Essays in Honor of Gary Marker’. The articles ‘Businesswomen in Eighteenth-Century Russian Provinicial Towns’ by Alexander Kamenskii and ‘Catherine’s Liberation of the Greeks: High-Minded Discourse and Everyday Realities’ by Elena Smilyanskaya were also included in the collection.

HSE has held its post-graduate humanities summer school 'History in the First Person: From Antiquity to Our Time'. The summer school was dedicated to texts written or recorded in the first person, as well as to various methods for analysing them. The school’s organizers and participants spoke with the HSE news service about what ego texts are, how representatives of different disciplines work with them, and how French methodology differs from Russian.

HSE lecturers and students took part in the 2015 Summer School near the town of Dubna from July 11 through August 10. The representatives of the HSE School of Linguistics organised two different workshops at this year’s School, one on Language and the Brain, aimed at research in the field of neurolinguistics, and one on Linguistics Research, the main areas of which included field linguistics and anthropology.

Anna Guseva, Associate Professor at the School of History delivered a report at the XI International Conference ‘Sustainable City Life. Exploring Aesthetic Values in Urban Settings’, organized by the International Institute of Applied Aesthetics at the University of Helsinki.

The fourth HSE School of Cultural Studies Cultural Effects of Borders annual road trip passed through Rostov Oblast, Dagestan, Kalmykia and Chechnya. On the two week journey, students looked for regional cultural differences, talked to the local people and conducted their own research. On their return they talked to HSE News about the oldest city in the Russian Federation, local variations in women’s clothing and the taste of grilled ground squirrel.

On April 27 John F. Bailyn, Professor at the Department of Linguistics, State University of New York spoke on: ‘Language, Fire, Music and Chess: Thoughts on the Evolution and Acquisition of Cognitive Systems’. The event was organized by HSE School of Linguistics.

Olga Sozinova, a third-year undergraduate student, shared her impressions of a workshop she attended in Leiden.

Vitaly Kurennoy, Professor and Head of HSE’s School of Cultural Studies (Faculty of Humanities) gave a presentation entitled ‘Contemporary Cultural Policy in Russia’ on April 22 at Ruhr University Bochum during a joint colloquium of the Department of Eastern European History and a seminar at the Lotman Institute for Russian and Soviet Culture.

On April 10, 2015, the session ‘Universalism and Relativism in the Philosophy of Language and Mind’, organized by the Schools of Linguistics and Philosophy, took place at HSE as part of the XVI April International Academic Conference.

On April 1, 2015 Oleg Budnitskii, Professor at the School of History and HSE Honorary Professor delivered a lecture on ‘Women in the Red Army, 1941–45’ at the colloquium of the History Department of the European University Institute (Florence).
