In this lecture the concept of ‘Wild Writing’ will be introduced and the construction of the MA course at Essex University – exploring the links between literature, landscape and the natural world.

What is Wild writing? It as a country cousin of the psychogeography movement which emerged in the mid-twentieth century as a novel way of understanding the urban landscape. Wild writing also stands as the way of writing about nature -- the literature of the natural world.

The lecture will be based on local Essex landscapes discussion:

·     The locale of Essex university – Wivenhoe Park, the estate on whose land the modern university sits – John Constable’s painting, Wivenhoe Park (1816)

·     Daniel Defoe, Tour through the Whole Island of Great Britain (1724-27) – his stories of Essex farmers on the Dengie Peninsula and the ague

·     Defoe’s Tilbury tileworks and Robinson Crusoe(1719) – discovery of the ‘real’ Man Friday

·     Introduction to the works of John Clare (1793-1864) – the ‘Peasant Poet’

·     Reading from Dr. Canton’s book Out of Essex: Re-Imagining a Literary Landscape on tracing the footsteps of John Clare.

After the lecture, on Saturday, everyone is invited to step beyond the streets of Moscow to feel the literary echoes still there in the fields and footpaths of Tolstoy’s creative homeland, Yasnaya Polyana.
